Winter in the Chicagoland area can be brutal — heavy snow, ice, and freezing temperatures take a toll on your home's exterior. But just because the snow has melted doesn’t mean the damage is done. In fact, early spring is one of the most important times to inspect your home and ensure it’s ready for what comes next.
At Muller Exteriors, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners prepare for spring weather by catching small issues before they turn into expensive problems. Here’s our expert-recommended checklist to help you do the same.
1. Inspect Your Roof for Winter Damage
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense — and winter can do a number on it.
Look for:
- Missing or loose shingles from wind or snow removal
- Cracked or curling shingles that indicate aging
- Granule loss which can accelerate roof deterioration
- Water stains or soft spots in the attic
Even if things look okay from the ground, hidden damage could be brewing. That’s why we recommend scheduling a professional roof inspection each spring — especially before the rainy season begins.
2. Clean and Secure Gutters & Downspouts
Your gutter system plays a critical role in directing water away from your home’s foundation and roofline. When clogged or damaged, gutters can cause:
- Overflowing water that damages siding and landscaping
- Water pooling near the foundation
- Rot and mold near fascia or soffits
Make sure your gutters are:
- Clear of debris
- Securely fastened to the fascia
- Properly sloped to direct water to the downspouts
- Equipped with gutter guards, if you're looking for a low-maintenance solution
3. Check Roof Flashing, Chimneys & Skylights
Water intrusion doesn’t always come from obvious places. In fact, roof flashing and penetrations are common leak points, especially after snow and ice melt away.
Check:
- Flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for gaps or rust
- Seals and caulk that may have cracked or worn down
- Brick chimneys for missing mortar or deterioration
These areas can be hard to access — our Haag-certified team inspects all flashing points as part of our spring tune-up service.
4. Examine Siding, Soffits, and Fascia
Siding protects your walls, insulation, and framing from moisture. Even small cracks or gaps can let water seep in.
Look for:
- Warped or cracked siding panels
- Discoloration or bubbling paint, which can indicate water behind the wall
- Soffit or fascia boards that are soft or discolored
Addressing these issues early not only prevents water damage but also keeps your home looking its best for the season.
5. Inspect Windows and Door Seals
Spring is the perfect time to evaluate the energy efficiency and water-tightness of your windows and doors.
Check for:
- Cracked or brittle caulking around window and door frames
- Condensation between panes (a sign of a failed seal)
- Drafts or moisture inside the window casing
Updating seals or replacing old windows can improve comfort and lower energy bills — while also protecting against heavy spring rains.
6. Peek Into the Attic
Your attic is often the first place where signs of a leak will appear. Take a few minutes to look for:
- Water stains or discoloration on the underside of the roof
- Musty odors or signs of mold/mildew
- Wet insulation or sagging drywall
If you’re unsure what to look for, we’re happy to provide a comprehensive inspection — including your attic space.
