When the roof of your home gets damaged, it’s only natural for you as the homeowner to want to prevent any water from getting inside. During hurricane season, it can take a while for your favorite Schaumburg roofing specialist to get to you, so it’s vital that you take some measures to fix your roof temporarily. Installing a waterproof tarp over a damaged portion of the roof is one of the best ways that you can buy some time until you can get a leaking roof repaired.

To cover a leaking part of your roof with tarp, you’re going to need the following:

  • Ladder
  • Utility knife
  • Saw (hand or electric)
  • Wood boards (at least two inches wide)
  • Tarp
  • Industrial stapler
  • Hammer and some roof nails

Begin by identifying the damaged parts of your roof. Climb a ladder and check for damaged tiles, flashings, etc. Next, unfold the tarp and see how much you need to cover up the part of the roof that’s leaking. Use your utility knife to cut the tarp into a square. With your industrial stapler, staple the tarp to the board to secure it.

With the tarp secure, use the saw to cut wood board pieces that will cover the tarp at the edges. Afterward, nail the board onto the tarp. Be sure to cover each side of the square tarp with wood board so that water will never have an entry point. Repeat the steps as necessary depending on how many damaged portions your roof sustained during the bad weather.

Covering up your roof’s damaged portions with tarp is a pretty easy repair to do. However, if you don’t know your way around home tools, it’s best to acquire the help of someone who does. Likewise, remember that a tarp cover is only meant as a temporary fix. Schedule your roof repair as soon as you can so that your roofer can get too you in the soonest possible time.
